Huanglongbing (HLB) or citrus greening is a devastating disease affecting the citrus industry in Florida, as well as other countries around the world. Mathematical models are a powerful tool for understanding how efficient different intervention strategies are at controlling the disease and which are the most cost-effective. I am currently working on crop-raiding baboons and the possibility that mesopredator release can occur if the carnivores within protected parks go regionally extinct. This leads to the problem of increased baboon populations, more crop-raiding and hence more conflicts with the neighbouring humans.
During my PhD I studied the effects of seasonal forcing on different ecological and epidemiological systems with a particular focus on how it affects cycles of population abundance. This included considering how the same species can undergo stable or multi-year cyclic dynamics depending on different seasonal forcing conditions. My work mostly looked at predator-prey and host-macroparasite systems.
